<p>On May 19<sup>th</sup>, the <a href="http://www.bostonproducts.org/" target="_blank">Boston Product Management Association</a> hosted <a href="http://www.bostonproducts.org/events/event_details.asp?id=156620" target="_blank">“How to Deliver a Successful New Product Introduction,” </a>a presentation by launch expert and author, Julie Hall of Schneider Associates, and commercialization guru Neil Baron of Baron Strategic Partners.</p>
<p>Julie and Neil delivered powerful lessons about how the launch landscape has changed from Business-to-Business (B2B) and Business-to-Consumer (B2C) to Business-to-Everyone (B2E).  In today’s environment, to launch a product successfully companies need to use consumer feedback and B2E tactics. ”The new stage gate model of manufacturing involves the customer, not just at the end of the process when the product is on the shelf, but during the entire development process,” Julie said, speaking about the need to listen to customers to be able to create products that consumers want and need.</p>
<p>Neil added, “Beta testing should not be a step in the engineering process, it should be the foundation of a company’s entire launch campaign.”</p>

<p>Schneider Associates EVP and Partner Julie Hall was interviewed recently on Bloomberg TV by “Taking Stock” host Pimm Fox following an article written by Joan Schneider and Julie, titled <a href="http://hbr.org/2011/04/why-most-product-launches-fail/ar/1">“Why Most Product Launches Fail”</a> in the <em>Harvard Business Review</em>. Hall shared her launch expertise and discussed some of the reasons why 75%-90% of new product launches fail within the first two years.</p>
<p>From start-ups to major corporations, Hall revealed that launch failures can happen to companies of any size – even when the product is well designed. Hall discussed Mosquito Magnet, a great product launched during a West Nile outbreak that experienced manufacturing and supply chain problems. Hall also talked about the confusing positioning of Proctor &amp; Gamble’s Febreeze ScentStories Player, one of Hall’s favorite launch failures. Julie used the example of  the Segway, one of the most innovative failed product launches in recent history, as a prime example of short-sighted marketing.
